- Some news forwarded to me by Lee Horner from an interview in NME
regarding a possible project involving a Spiritualized member and DJ
Shadow. The following is an exerpt of the interview:
'...Pierce also confirmed that he was working on a
project, possibly resulting in an album, with Dr John, DJ Shadow, and
Andrew Weatherall. "We're trying to do something that's way beyond
Spiritualized meets DJ Shadow or meets Andrew Weatherall," said
Pierce. "It might possibly be an album; I think we can do more than
just a single."'
- The previously mentioned (see Previously section) remixes CD of What
Does Your Soul Look Like is mentioned in the Future Releases section of
Siren Discs. It will be two
remixes by DJ Die and Peshay respectively. Tentatively released January
12, 1998. (Thanks to Neil Tejano)

- ...And More Preemptive Strike News: Well, thanks to a couple of
alert fans who subscribe to rec.music.hip-hop we have the Pre-Emptive
Strike tracklist! It really is only made up of three EP's plus some
"interlude-"type stuff a-la the Transmissions pieces from Endtroducing.
Disc 1 Strike One In/Flux Hindsight Strike
Two What Does Your Soul Look Like pt 2 What Does Your Soul Look
Like pt 3 What Does Your Soul Look Like pt 4 What Does Your Soul
Look Like pt 1 Strike Three (and i'm out) High Noon Organ
Donor (extended overhaul)
And, of course,
Camel
Bobsled Race (DJ Shadow Megamix by DJ Q Bert)
I would have to
agree with Michael Lane, who said in his e-mail that he was a little
disappointed, and that there should have been some SoleSides tracks.
Well, since I have most of this (except a CD version of WDYSL) already
it is pretty useless. But, for someone who only owns Endtroducing, this
is a very good addition! This compilation looks like a compilation I
made recently called "A Lifetime of Vinyl Culture," just so I had
something to play in my truck.
Are you listening, SoleSides? I
think we need a DJ Shadow compilation CD with SS001, SS005, plus some
production works!
- The promotional copies of Camel Bobsled Race have hit the stations.
The EP has been identified as MW084. According to Simon Ward, it is in
two parts on the vinyl:
Side 1 13.26 mixed by Q-bert Side 2
10.33 mixed by Q-bert.
It has been confirmed by some fans who
have it already, that the CD is only one track.

- More Preemptive Strike News: According to Wall of Sound in their Release Dates
section, Preemptive Strike will be released January
27, 1998. According to them, all four parts of the "What Does Your
Soul Like" EP will be included as well as In/Flux and the new "High
Noon." They mention "Organ Donor" like it will be the "Extended
Overhaul" version from the "High Noon" single. Thanks to Leslie Langdon
for the update!
November 28, 1997
- According to Pollstar DJ
Shadow will be playing at Kezar
Pavilion in San Francisco, CA on December 6. It looks like Josh will
be back from his European stint opening for Radiohead. If anyone is
taping this show, or has access to someone who is taping this show,
please contact me. I would like to
arrange a trade.
November 24, 1997
- Okay, so SPIN has content on the Web. But they still don't have a
site! Here's the link to the Homemade
Jams article on Music Boulevard. "Boy Howdy" to Eric Gardner for the
eagle-eye on the web!
November 16, 1997
- I finally got a copy of the BBC-1 Show (see October 23 News). It
sounds phenominal! There are two songs that I am not familiar with, if
anyone who has a copy of the show recognizes them, please let me know. Here is the track list:
1. unknown 2. Lost and Found 3. unknown 4. High Noon
5. Organ Donor 6. Midnight in a Perfect World
- The Discography now
includes radio appearances and live recordings. If anyone has any to
add, let me know.
November 11, 1997
- Q-Bert gives a little description of the Camel Bobsled Race single
at the Invisible Skratch
Piklz website on their Skratch
Pad question and answer board. Essentially it will be him scratching
over his favorite beats from Endtroducing. Thanks to Adel Hazan for the
tip!
November 9, 1997
- According to Siren Discs, The
Camel Bobsled Race CD will be "7-track 24-minute continuously mixed mini
album that unites Shadow's avant guarde hip hop genius with world class
scratch mixing from Q-Bert." Release: December 8 (Thanks to John C.
Book)
November 4, 1997
- DJ Shadow gets mention in the December 1997 SPIN as part of their
"Home Made Jams" article. He is discussed alsong with contemporaries
like Todd Terry, The Dust Brothers, The Crystal Method, Josh Wink and
others. They seem to like him.
Note: What a lame magazine SPIN has
become. Why the hell does SPIN not have an Internet website (they have a
cheap section on AOL called SPINOnLine). So no links here, kids!
November 2, 1997
- Thanks to Andy Arnette for clearing up the Free Kitten remixing. It,
in fact, will be DJ Spooky, not DJ Shadow, who will be doing the
remixing for the new Free Kitten album "Sentimental Education." The
October 24th entry will be removed from News. I am also going to contact
the proprietor of the Sonic Youth site with the correct information.
November 1, 1997
- According to Addicted to Noise
in their Music
News of the World section, "Preemptive Strike (Dec. 9) is the name
of an upcoming album by DJ Shadow, featuring 78 minutes of music
previously available only as imports in the U.S. The initial pressing of
the CD will feature a bonus disc with a 24-minute-long DJ Q-Bert megamix
entitled "Camel Bobsled Race"... " (thanks AGAIN to Michael Lane for the
tip)
October 23, 1997
- On October 30, DJ Shadow will be playing the last of the John Peel
broadcasts
from Brookes University on the BBC. The live broadcast of the show
will be aired on Radio 1
at the same time.
October 20, 1997
- According to the SoleSides
website, there will be a new DJ Shadow album called "Pre-Emptive Strike"
-- a collection of Pre-Endtroducing tracks. I hope it has 89.9 Megamix
on it (long, sad story). If anyone has any track information or any
other details, please e-mail me the
details! (Big thanks to Michael Lane for the tip!)
Previously
- According to sources, DJ Shadow was #3 on the Irish singles charts
this summer with "Stem" due to the fact that it was used in a Guinness
ad all summer. (Thanks to Darren Webb for the tip)
- DJ Shadow has a track on the soundtrack to the new Wim
Winders movie "The End of
Violence" out on Geffen label Outpost Recordings. His song,
along with such heavyweights as Michael Stipe, U2 & Sinead O'Connor,
and Los Lobos among others appear on one of two soundtracks of the
movie. One of the soundtracks is just the Ry Cooder score and the other
is the compilation of artists' contributions. The DJ Shadow song is
called "Untitled Heavy Beat (Part 1 and 2)."
- High Noon (Mo'Wax MW063CD) is finally out! Quite possibly my
favorite song so far. Excellent guitar and organs. The best remix of
Organ Donor so far, too. No word on a US release.
- DJ Shadow has a track on the soundtrack to
Warner Brothers movie "187."
- Mr. Davis is very busy lately... (tip o' the hat to Jesse Chairez
for forwarding me the following tips from the MSN site...)
"Richard Ashcroft will appear on an upcoming album put
together by DJ Shadow. According to NME, the influential Shadow not
only snared the Verve's frontman, the group also hooked a recording
date with Radiohead's Thom Yorke when the Oxford, England, band rolls
into the Shadow's hometown of San Francisco July 27 to play at the Fox
Warfield Theater. "According to Radiohead's spokesperson, the
collaboration is something DJ Shadow cooked up with Mo'Wax recording
label head James Lavelle, and will be released next year under the
rubric of Unkle [This is U.N.K.L.E. that is mentioned below --Mike].
Earlier this month, Yorke told Vox magazine, "I don't know what
exactly is going to happen. There's absolutely no planning involved.
We're gonna turn up on the day and sit in a very large room in this
cinematic studio we've booked, and he's going to set up his decks and
mixer and sampler, and I'm just going to set up a microphone in the
middle of this huge empty [room]. It's gonna be great. James [Lavelle]
is going to do it as well. We're going to sit around and confuse each
other." "You may be wondering why this particular wonderfully
strange pairing, but Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood recently
confessed that DJ Shadow was one of his group's main inspirations for
"Paranoid Android." While Blur may have Pavement and Beck, all of us
can rest assured that Radiohead has chosen far more wisely. Not only
is the master remixer a collaborator, the band also has hired him to
remix "Subterranean Homesick Alien." And, yes, it's a tip of the hat
to Jakob Dylan's pop."
- From the Solesides News
page:
"UP NEXT... look for the Muzappers EP sometime soon, with
three remixes of Muzappers and two new songs, including one by DJ
Shadow...."
- From a couple of sources online, it seems that DJ Shadow will be
participating on possibly three projects. One of them will be a Mo'Wax
project called U.N.K.L.E., which according to sources, is label head
James Lavelle's project with Shadow as the Executive Producer. Shadow is
quoted in an article that he is
wrapping up production an album for Mo'Wax-- at Levelle's insistance--
of a "showtunes/hiphouse masterpiece." Additionally, he will participate
in a Solesides project called "Quantum." Quantum is the Solesides "super group"
with Lyrics Born, Chief XCel and DJ Shadow on production and Lyrics
Born, Lateef and Gab on vocals.
- The U.S. release of "Midnight In A Perfect World" is out on
Mo'Wax/FFRR. It has a different cover than the Mo'Wax release and
includes the Gap Mix and album versions of "Midnight..." as well as the
Cut Chemist Party Mix. Also on the EP is the album version of "The
Number Song" and "Red Bus Needs To Leave" from the Mo'Wax "Stem" EP. You
can order it from Newbury
Comics online.
- From the Spoon website: Slated for U.S. release on Mo'Wax/FFRR:
Remixes of DJ Shadow's 'What Does Your Soul Look Like' by DJ Die amongst
others.
