December 31, 2002

Even on the last day of 2002, there's some good news here at SOLESIDES, and that is that DJ Shadow will be doing a 2 hour Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 this Saturday into Sunday night at midnight (UK Time).

It'll be really cool if someone can record this set straight from (digital) radio and makes it available. I'd be glad to spread the live set through this site. If you're willing to contribute, please email me on it.

from Strictly Kev  ( ninjatune / the ninjatune board );

"The Soulwax mix of Shadow's new single is basically the '6 Days' acapella over the B-52s' '52 girls' and.... eeer, that's it

Pretty good for parties and i can't wait for all the Mowax lot to start fighting over old B-52s LPs on ebay. Prehaps they'll get a bit more recognition for their back catalogue again"

New DJ Shadow video. It's the video for Walkie Talkie. Will this be the next single? It hasn't been confirmed yet. Perhaps it's Walkie Talkie, Perhaps it's Right Thing.

click to watch the video: real / wm

It seems that not only DJ Z-Trip did a remix of DJ Shadow's Right Thing/GDMFSOB, also James Lavelle made one. Both mixes have just recently sent in, so it looks like that the next Shadow single will see a release any time soon (from djztrip.com).

I guess y'all already know about the fantastic new "Texas Funk" Album. It's a very cool Funk compilation and is ready on CD and Vinyl. Two years of hard work have gone into this for you to enjoy not only the fantastic music but the extensive sleeve notes and photographs.

- Properly researched liner notes including an introduction by DJ Shadow
- Pictures, interviews and information on all the artists
- All tracks are officially licensed. Nearly all are seeing their first ever official re-release, some have never been released at al
- Reproduction from original master tapes

Here are the liner notes from Shadow:

Introduction by DJ Shadow
In the heyday of funk music, some regions of America were more active than others. California, Ohio, and most of the south produced the lion's share of recorded output. The Lone Star state in particular seems to have been an extremely fertile plot of raw funky earth, especially when one considers the relatively sparse population. Although the black communities of Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio were well established, none of them could contest the renowned reputations of larger municipalities like Chicago, Harlem, and Detroit when it came to African-American music and heritage. And yet those moderate-sized Texas cities managed to unleash more bona-fide funk classics than all of those esteemed metropolises combined. The question is, why? Collectors have asked time and time again, "What is it about Texas?" Why did so many great examples of the genre come from even the tiniest Texan towns? What did Lackland, El Paso, Lubbock, and Longview have that other cities and states didn't? Why do the songs sound so RAW? It has been hypothesized by collectors of garage and psychedelic rock, kindred spirits who share a reverence for Texas music, that the infamous intolerance of Lone Star society yielded an army of frustrated youths desperate for an outlet. Making wild, violent music was one of the few relatively safe ways of letting off steam in a territory where the long arm of the law reached farther than most. This would also explain why most of these records remain so scarce; it was probably ill-advised to attract attention beyond the immediate core community. Not that there would have been much of a chance for wider circulation, since Texas was markedly absent of the big record distributors which dotted much of the North-East. But while this theory might explain quality and rarity, it doesn't account for QUANTITY. Why was the Texas funk scene so prolific? The answer, it would seem, is location, location, location. Texas represented the end of the line for bands playing the "Chittlin' Circuit," a notoriously grueling but potentially star-making route of black communities in the South. Many groups simply found themselves stranded on the prairie with time to kill and new jams to record. Add this lot to the already burgeoning local scene, and you have a recipe for continuous funk mayhem. Personally, I've had a soft spot for Texas hospitality since my first buying trip there in 1993. That may not sound like a long time ago to the Northern Soul crowd, but believe me, back then NO ONE was buying James Polk records. Even as late as 1998, you could still find Twink titles laying about for 8 dollars, waiting for a home. How things have changed in the last few years! But enough reminiscing, it's time to bask in the glory of a music that is very much alive, pulsing to the unique rhythms of the Black American experience the way only funk can.and with a Texas twist that will make your ears smile.
J. Davis, Sept. '02

Texas funk is out on Jazzman Records.

More new DJ Shadow music; a bootleg. It's called "What I do in my bedroom" and that's about the only information there is on this one. If you have more, email me. Oh, and here's the audio.

It sounds funky and sweet. But bootlegs frustrate me.

The DJ Shadow gig in Adelaide, Australia, has been cancelled. Quite some DJ Shadow fans seem to be very dissapointed with this and therefore, FUNKYJ started an online petition to get Shadow back. This really shows that Shadow has a solid and very active fanbase. Check the petition site out, and sign it.

November 11, 2002

Spinemagazine has a vintage interview with DJ Shadow online. This conversation took place back in early 1995, before his album Endtroducing launched him into beat icon orbit and around the same time, some cheap vampire hack  germinated that term 'triphop' (RIH). - thanks to rockinloser for this info -

Make sure to check out the weekly download because it's the mighty concert that Blackalicious did for BBC Radio 1.

DJ Shadow will be playing at the NSSN / Not so Silent Night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. The complete line up is kinda weird. Check it - from Mike Manewitz -

November 8, 2002

New Blackalicious Pictures are added to the pictures section. Check them out. Also, the audio of the interview DJ Shadow did on Belgian radio station "Studio Brussels" is online now. To save bandwith usage, I didn't add it to solesides.com.  email me and I shall provide the exact link where you can find it.

November 5, 2002

Yesterday, November 4, BBC Radio one aired a part of the DJ Shadow / Nottingham gig. The set was incredibly good. Shadow went mainly crazy on Organ Donor and High Noon. Also, it's was very cool to hear some nice Solesides beats (e.g. Entropy), at the beginning of the set.

The set will be online for one week at the BBC / Steve Lamacq Site

Pictures of that gig are added to the pictures section of this site

I recorded the set from the audio stream and the soundquality is pretty good. Obviously, I'm looking for a version that's recorded straight from (digital) radio. So, it'll be cool if someone could help me out (trade or something).

You all may have noticed that the Weekly (mp3) download is back on solesides.com. Be sure to check that as well.

November 2, 2002

From DOP;  I just got back from meeting up with Z-Trip while he was in town and I got to hear his remix of Shadow's "Right Thing/GDMFSOB".  It'll definitely be coming out on Shadow's next single.  I was gonna tell
ya'll a bit about it, but I don't want to over hype it.  Needless to say, I REALLY dug it, and I think all the Shadow fans will too. Hopefully for all you DJs out there, the vinyl will also have the Z-Trip Bonus Beats as well
.

The Nottinham gig that Shadow did yesterday (October 27), will be broadcasted on BBC Radio 1 / The steve Lamacq show on November 4. Don't miss it. BBC even has a special page dedicated to this broadcast. Check it out. I hope someone records it an will make it available somewhere, as I can't receive BBC Radio 1 where I live. So, a straight-from-radio recording will be very welcome and much appreciated.

Dotmusic has a review of DJ Shadow live at the Brixton Academy, October 19, 2002 (Thanks to Stu Lancaster for this info). New visitors' reviews are added as well. Check the review section.

Here's an email I got from Toby Hoyte, who had a conversation with Shadow.

"I met with DJ Shadow on Friday night after his gig at Brixton.  I was introduced to him by Patrick from the original UK Nirvana, who Shadow sampled on Stem.  I met Patrick backstage, I had VIP tickets, and we got to
talking.  To surmise what Patrick, myself and DJ Shadow discussed:

Shadow will probably not be in a position to record a "DJ Shadow" album in long while "but hopefully you won't have to wait as long as you did for Private Press".

Following this tour Shadow will work with Zach Le Rocha on his solo album (I got the impression that Shadow's role will be more than just a collaborator on a couple of tracks). Then he will "do some stuff with Quannum" and then
finally think about his own album.

The fact that Blood On the Motorway is 9mins 11secs long is a coincidence. That track like most of PP was recorded before September last year."

--

Michael Lane (DOP) said the following;

SandboxAutomatic has Shadow's "Entropy" 12"
for sale.  I'd bet money that it's a bootleg from the UK.  That would also
explain why some copies have been showing up on eBay lately from the
UK.  Also,  the Z-Trip 12" they have is also
a bootleg of some tracks off of "Uneasy Listening Vol 1".  Here's a message
about it from Z-Trip himself:

I don't support that shit at all....
CD's are for listening...YES...
But to me, records are for playing out...
Not cool of then to bootleg the wax.....
CD's I could give a shit about...
Records....
Not cool.
And what the fuck is the wanky dog??
The songs don't have names to them for a reason.
I'm looking into it.
Again..., I'm not so pissed that they did it, really.... It's just that
they didn't do it right... that shit is half ass....and I don't work like
that.

The new DJ Shadow single will be released in the first week of October. Like most of y'all already know, it's going to be Six Days. Shadow made a remix of Six Days with Mos Def. It has the beat from Walkie Talkie under the vocals from Six Days, plus some other goodies that make this track one of the tightest productions of the current Private Press period (at least, that's my opinion).

I already used the sixdays vocals + walkie talkie combination in my djshadow vs solesides.com mix. To get that mix, email me and I'll hook you up.

Here's a video of Shadow talking about Six Days:

New Album and EP from Lyrics Born. ‘Hello’ is the first single to be lifted from the album and shows the man Born is still on fire. A laidback shuffling groove allows Tom to show his lyrical prowess backed by some sweet female vocals. A funky headnodder that grows and grows…‘One Session’ is on the flip– Vangelis synths float over a tight dubby break and bassline as Lyrics’ subtle production values shine through. The Altered Ego’s do their thang on the mic flitting between monotone robo-rappin and the infectious, rootsy chorus to great effect. (source: ninjatune)

Six Days / bad company remix. The mowax board speaks:

More news! Finally something from a different side of the Quannum-front; The Blackalicious front. The classic EP Melodica (The first release from Blackalicious) will be re-issued in the beginning of next year. So if you were going to download and burn a copy for yourself, don't do it. Wait and  buy the almost-original stuff!

Just recently, the Latyrx debut album has been re-issued as well, so keep your eyes out for that one, because it's as classic as classic can be.

Neville and Jenny Save the day. The performance of DJ Shadow at the Dutch Lowlands festival was almost cancelled. The day before the Lowlands set, Shadow played at the Creamfields festival in the UK. That gig started much later than planned and therefore it was almost impossible to get all the equipment into the tourbus and arrive in time for the Lowlands festival.

But Neville and Jenny, both 50+ (so they could easily be SHadow's parents), did everything they could to be in time for Lowlands. They succeeded. Thanks people!

Benny G, from the Mowax bulletin Board bumped into DJ Shadow when he was shopping in London. Here's his story:

I was walking along Great Russell Street when I saw this familiar looking guy. At first glance I was like, he looks A LOT like DJ Shadow! But I couldn't believe it, so I stalked him around the street corner when eventually he walked into a newsagent. I followed him in and I thought, what the heck, just ask! And it turns out to be SHADOW HIMSELF for real! I was starstruck! I went, "Oh my gawd, Shadow! I don't believe this!" I started taking pics of him like a tabloid reporter and I had a small chat with him. Asked him what he was doing in London, how long's he gonna be around, is he performing tonight, how're the Quannum guys, blah blah. All the while apologising for being such a geeky fanboy! But hey, I MET DJ SHADOW! In an Indian newsagent of all places! Woo hoo!!!

Check out the pictures he's made here

There's something more you all should check out. It's the new site by DJCursa. Just check and be impressed.

I haven't heard the set, but If you have tracklisting or more info, I would appreciate it if you inform me about it. Listen to the interview HERE

DJ Ztrip speaks: 2 days ago DJ Shadow asked me to remix a track off his new album... the track I'm remixing is " right thing/gdmfsob"
I have some good ideas moving along in my head for this one... Back to work...

I am really stoked to be doing this for him...I've always thought that his stuff is light years ahead of most...and now I get a chance to have a crack at remixing one of his works.... Very honored.

New Shadow release. DJ Shadow - Global Warmth.

- 4x CD album 5 hour non-LP collection inc live sets, radio sessions / - 6x LP box-set special edition stand up box +exclusive live bonus LP / - UK DVD audio inc all 5 hours on one disc - diff set to LP / CD sets

This seems to be a compilation of rare old and new Shadow tracks. Keep in mind that this is a bootleg and I bet DJ Shadow is NOT very happy with this kind of releases. It's better to download the stuff for free, just to make sure the people who are going to release this won't make money out of this. Anyways. For those who are still interested and want to buy it, here are some tracks that are rumored to be on this Global Warmth thing:

Lost & Found
Midnight (Gab mix)
Entropy
Camel bobsled race
Cut chemist remix of the number song
Pain killer remix
Dark Days
Lifers Group - real deal Shadow remix.
Radio Sole / plus some live shows.

DJ shadow's fav. soundtracks revisited. here's the article from mojo about Shadow's favorite
soundtracks:
CLICK!

For the last 12 months, Dante and DJ Shadow have been working  on a comprehensive discography of North American funk on 45" from 1966-76. It will be fully annotated and cross-referenced with plenty of photos, label scans and the like. The page count is obnoxious and they are only to the middle of the alphabet. It should be released in about 2 years (...)

The latest isssue (#103) of MOJO has a little article on Shadow's top 14 soundtrack songs, which are:

1.Lalo Schifrin - Scorpio's Theme (Dirty Harry)
2.13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me (High Fidelity)
3.James Brown - The Boss (Black Ceasar)
4.John Williams - The Imperial March (The Empire Strikes Back)
5.Les Baxter - Hot Wind (Hell's Belles)
6.Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes (Watership Down)
7.Johnny Pate - You Can't even Walk In The Park (Shaft in Africa)
8.Moby - God Moving Over the Face of the Water (Heat)
9.Dennis Coffey - Theme From Black Belt Jones (Black Belt Jones)
10.Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness (Rocky)
11.Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - unknown track (You Are
What You Eat)
12.David Julyan - Original Score (Memento)
13.Eric B. and Rakim - Know The Ledge (Juice)
14.Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street (Across 10th Street)

Here seems to be a little bit of cheating involved: Some of those tracks are just songs that were used in films, sor are not really soundtracks songs. e.g.

2.13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me (High Fidelity)
10.Kool & the Gang - Summer Madness (Rocky)
13.Eric B. and Rakim - Know The Ledge (Juice)

DJ Shadow is 'in session' all this week on BBC Radio one, which means that they'll be playing a different version of a different DJ Shadow track each night. (They aren't remixes by someone else, it's still all Shadow's work).

Thanks to sad adam from the mowax board for this info

Tonight's track was Right Thing mixed with Nursery Rhyme.  I wanted to record this one, but my internet connection got cut off. So be sure to check out Steve Lamaq's radio show every night this week and record the Shadow stuff. It would be really cool if someone could get me this mixes.

First of all, it's James Brown's birthday today. He's born in 1928 so that makes him 74.

On June 11, Astralwerks releases 'Constant Elevation' - A collection of ground-breaking music from artists with a new perspective on hip hop, featuring exclusive tracks from some of the biggest names on the scene: El-P, Anti-Pop Consortium, Z-Trip, Chief Xcel from  Blackalicious, Peanut Butter Wolf, This Kid Called Miles from Breakestra, Steinski, Recloose, Freestyle  Fellowship and more. Showcasing innovative DJs, producers, turntablists and MCs, 'Constant Elevation'  bridges the gap between hip-hop and electronica. For more info and music, check out the Astralwerks site

"Track 11 "Multitude"//Chief Xcel of Blackalicious - Whether he's working with his partner in Blackalicious, Gift of Gab, or with any number of his Quannum labelmates (DJ Shadow, Latyrx), Chief Xcel's darkly funk has always hung heavy, as if each song were saturated with the centuries-long history of black people's struggle in this country. Just check Blackalicious' third album, Blazing Arrows (MCA). This is Chief Xcel's first released instrumental, and it is an inspirational epiphany that closes the album with liberating spirit."

New Shadow promo from MCA is out. According to www.endtroducing.com  the tracklisting is as follows:

1) The Private Press Mega Mix
2) live on KCRW (edited for radio airplay)
3) live at Virgin Records NYC
4) live on BBC1

The Mega mix doesn't seem to have any music from The Private Press, but I assume it's the 10 minutes mix DJ Shadow did at KCRW radio, april 17. Track 2 is the 15 minute mix from that same radio show. To listen to the audio, go to the media section of this site. Track 3, Live At Virgin, must be the UNKLE set which DJ Shadow did during the UNKLE/Psyence fiction promo days. If that is the one, this cd is a must have. Great set. Info on track 4, live on BBC1, is not available at the moment.

Thanks to endtroducing.com for this info
